EMG and nerve conduction studies (EMG/NCS)

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are tests that measure how well nerves and muscles are working. NCS sends small electrical pulses along a nerve. EMG uses a thin needle to record muscle activity. A neurologist may recommend them for numbness, weakness, or nerve pain.

What it is

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS) are tests that measure how well the nerves and muscles are working. NCS records how signals travel along a nerve. EMG records the electrical activity inside a muscle using a thin needle. The two are often done in the same appointment.

Why a neurologist may recommend it

A neurologist may recommend EMG and NCS for symptoms such as numbness, tingling, weakness, or nerve pain, to help find where the problem is and how the nerves and muscles are affected. The results guide the diagnosis and the plan.

How to prepare

Come with clean skin and avoid using cream or lotion on the day, so the sensors make good contact. Wear loose clothing. Tell the team beforehand if you take blood-thinning medicine, have a pacemaker or other implanted device, or have a bleeding problem.

Safety and what you may feel

EMG and NCS are low-risk tests. The pulses and the needle can be briefly uncomfortable. Serious problems are uncommon. The tests give information about nerve and muscle function at the time of the test, read together with your history and examination.     During the NCS part: small sensors are placed on the skin and short electrical pulses are given along a nerve. The pulses feel like a quick tap or tingle.

    Afterwards

    During the EMG part: a thin needle is placed into one or more muscles to record their activity while at rest and during a gentle contraction. You may feel a brief ache.

    you can return to your usual activities. There may be minor tenderness or a small bruise where the needle was used.

Is EMG painful?
